What You Can Expect from Your Chiropractic Adjustment

Your initial visit to Family Chiropractic will likely be the longest (around 45 minutes) because it consists of four parts: a consultation, an examination, an adjustment, and diagnostic care.

1. Consultation

During the consultation, your chiropractor will ask you about your symptoms, medical history, past injuries, and other information related to your issue. You will need to fill out this information in a form before meeting with the doctor, so make sure to review your medical history and family medical history before your appointment.

The consultation is also your opportunity to ask questions to the chiropractor about your treatment or the discomfort you experience. The chiropractors at Family Chiropractic are happy to answer your questions and discuss your concerns.

2. The Examination

The examination is much like an exam you get from a medical doctor during your annual check-up. The chiropractor will check your blood pressure, pulse, and reflexes to better understand your musculoskeletal health. Depending on your condition, more specific tests may also be done to assess your neurological integrity, posture, or the range of motion of a specific area of the body.

3. The Adjustment

Your first appointment will likely include a minor adjustment. The chiropractor will ask you to lie down on a padded chiropractic table, where they will proceed to feel your joints and back with their hands to assess the underlying cause of your discomfort. Then, they may begin your treatment by practicing some spinal manipulative therapy. For most patients, the first adjustment is a minor one lasting fewer than 15 minutes.

4. Diagnostic Care

To properly diagnose your condition, the chiropractor may run some diagnostic tests. This usually involves an x-ray of the affected area. Though sometimes, an MRI is taken to analyze soft tissue. Not all patients require diagnostic testing.

After the Procedure

After your chiropractic adjustment, your chiropractor will talk to you about your treatment plan, including short-term and long-term goals for your recovery.

This is when you’ll schedule future appointments (realigning your spine can take a number of weeks) and learn about changes you can make at home. These may be minor lifestyle changes such as doing more physical activity, doing certain stretches at intervals throughout the day, or cutting back on alcohol or cigarettes.

It’s important to follow the chiropractor’s advice carefully. They won’t give you any meds, but you can think of their advice as a prescription for a healthy spine and nervous system.

You’ll be able to return to work or go about your day after your appointment. Just remember not to put any excess stress on the affected areas and to drink plenty of water.

During the Procedure

During your chiropractic adjustment, your chiropractor will manipulate your spine and muscles with their hands. They may also use instruments to assist the adjustment.

You may feel sudden force or a thrust to your spine followed by the feeling of a pop or click (similar to your knuckles cracking). Don’t panic. These swift adjustments are part of the treatment. They may be startling at first, but they are not painful. The chiropractor may also stretch or twist your neck, torso, and hips, which may cause more cracking and popping sensations. Again, this is normal.

If you suffer from muscle or joint pain, the chiropractor might use massage techniques to loosen the tissues and release tension. Or, they might recommend sessions with Family Chiropractic’s licensed massage therapist.

Most patients find chiropractic adjustment to be a relaxing and even enjoyable treatment, though some discomfort might occur during manual therapies, especially at the beginning of your treatment plan. If you feel more than mild pain or soreness at any time during your procedure, let your chiropractor know immediately.

How to Prepare for Your Chiropractic Appointment in Redwood City

There are a few steps you need to take to prepare for your first visit to Family Chiropractic in Redwood City.

  1. Review your medical history
  2. Check your insurance policy—it may cover your care
  3. Write down your symptoms
  4. Write down any questions you have for the chiropractor
  5. Drink water (staying hydrated will help your muscles recover from treatment)
  6. Take a walk or do some light movement to loosen up the spine
  7. Arrive on time

Chiropractic adjustment is a gentle and non-invasive procedure, so you don’t need to take any special precautions before treatment. The most important thing to remember is to be honest with your chiropractor.
